The Vampire Diaries follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who falls for the century-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their lives grow more and more complicated as Stefan's vicious brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) returns to town with a vendetta against his brother.

The Vampire Diaries season 2 episode 1: The Return, Katherine tells Damon that she never loved him and that it was always Stefan. Distraught, Damon goes to see Elena. Katherine goes to see Caroline in hospital after Stefan rejects her. Caroline is now healing, thanks to Damon's blood, and talks to Katherine thinking she's Elena.
